DIY Wall Art

DIY Wall Art for under $8.00!

Recently, I needed some cheap wall decor for a Home Staging project I was working on. I headed over to JoAnn’s and picked up two 16″ x 20″  blank canvases that were on sale for 40% off.

I was inspired by Ryann at DIY With My Guy’s Birds of a Feather post. Her project was seriously more romantic (read the details here); its really a beautiful tribute!! But it gave me an idea for a newsprint style background, with branches and leaves painted on top, in a layered effect.

Since Google is probably my second BFF, I hardly see myself picking up a dictionary anytime soon, so I didn’t feel guilty tearing out the pages of one I stashed in the back of my linen closet! I layered the pages horizontally instead of vertical, and decoupaged with Mod Podge.

Next I sketched some free-hand branches and leaves stretching across both canvases, which I painted with a medium taupe color.

I didn’t want the taupe branches to look like they were supposed to be shadows, so I sketched a few more branches and leaves going the opposite direction, on top of the dried taupe paint. I painted these second set of branches in a dark charcoal. The little birdie was an after thought, which I brushed on free hand… I guess I should have sketched it out first, because my husband asked if I was trying to make a pregnant bird… ??!! (A pregnant bird?? Seriously??)

And finally, for under $8.00 Do-It-Yourself Wall Art for any decor!!

I am so glad I found your website! I love art and crafting but, I don’t know a lot about painting furniture. I am now going to paint our old dining room chairs with chalk paint and find a base for a round glass table top we have. We will have a new dining set for less that we paid for 1 chair. YIPEE! Thank you!
