Repurposed Wood Tray

Do you ever buy things with no plan or intention… just knowing someday they can be reLoved into awesomeness? So you hold on, waiting for inspiration to strike? And then they sit there in the corner of your garage or the back of a closet, neatly arranged in a “to-do-someday” junk pile?

What???!!? Oh my gosh!! ME TOO!!!!

Repeat after me “We are NOT hoarders…”

We are not hoarders

Family Established Sign

For sometime, I’ve been wanting to make a special family sign or plaque to observe my grandparents name and wedding date. It makes my heart smile every time I think of my late uncle saying “After all, they started this mess!” and what a beautiful mess we are.

For this project, I was thinking of something a little different than one of my traditional wood signs. I wanted to make a memento that looked like its been hanging around for 65 years!

Here’s a link to some of my other painted wood signs :)

Repurposed Wood Tray

So I went shopping in my junk pile Deferred Project Inventory and lookie what I found! I picked up this vintage looking wooden tray from the Goodwill for only $5.99!!

According to the price tag, it seems this gem has been simmering in my garage for nearly a year.

Well, I thought it would be perfect to repurpose into a Family Name Established Sign!

So I came up with a quick little design, which I transferred to the tray and then hand-painted. Of course I wanted the paint to look aged and not crisp and fresh, so I distressed it lightly with sandpaper. Then I sealed it with 2 coats of a wipe-on poly.

Here’s my finished repurposed wood tray!

I think it looks aged to perfection!

Now, what kind of thrift store finds do you have laying around you can repurpose?

  1. I love what you did with the tray, I have a similar piece in my loft at the moment and now thanks to you I know exactly what to do with it. I like the family name design ,it is so well finished and will probably be a talking point for years to come. Thankyou for the inspiration.
